Biography

Prof. Shaowei Zhang is a full professor in the College of Engineering, Mathematics, and Physical Sciences at the University of Exeter, UK, and a visiting professor at the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geomatic Engineering at University College London. He has extensive experience in advanced materials research and teaching, and has overseen over 30 academic research and industrial R&D projects funded by various organizations across China, Japan, and the UK. His primary research interests lie in the processing, microstructures, and properties of structural and functional ceramics. Current research topics include the development of nanostructured low carbon composites, design of high entropy ceramic composites, novel synthesis and application of graphene and other 2-D materials, as well as the preparation of porous ceramics. Additionally, his work extends to the preparation of oxide/carbide coatings, armor materials, novel catalysts, and ultrahigh-temperature ceramics. He has published approximately 450 papers in high-quality refereed journals, co-authored two books, and contributed to six invited book chapters, in addition to holding >15 Patents. His work is highly regarded by the high-temperature ceramics and other materials communities. Many ceramic products developed under his guidance have been successfully commercialized and utilized by over 100 companies across the UK, China, Japan, and other countries. Prof. Zhang is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Prize of Advancement of Science and Technology by the Chinese government, EPSRC Advanced Fellowship, Verum Medal and Prize by the Institute of Materials, UK, and the Wakabayashi Prize (twice) by the Technical Association of Refractories of Japan. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Royal Society of Chemistry, and a Royal Society Industry Fellow. In addition to his research, Prof. Zhang serves as a consultant to over 15 ceramics manufacturers and users globally.

He also currently serves as the Chair of the finance management committee for the Korean American Scientists and Engineers Association (ksea.org). In the past, he served as a consultant or advisor at several companies: DuPont-Electronics Materials, former OCI Materials and other companies. Dr. Yang is magna cum laude graduate of Clark University, Worcester, MA where he earned a B.A. in Chemistry with Phi Beta Kappa after transferred from Seoul National University, Korea. Ghulam Yasin is a materials scientist with expertise in the areas of Nanotechnology, Electrochemistry, Carbon-Based Nanostructures and Nanomaterials, Materials Physics and Materials Chemistry and he works extensively on design, development and analysis of Nanoscale Advanced Functional Materials for Next-Generation Energy Storage and Conversion applications, as well as environmental remediation technologies. His current research is focused on exploring new opportunities to develop advanced materials that are targeted at addressing real-world problems using innovative technology. Specifically, he works on developing the advanced strategies for controlling the architectures of advanced materials on a 1-100 nm scale to address the fundamental and applied problems of Next-Generation Energy Storage and Conversion Devices/Technologies, Environment, and Engineering Applications.

Dr Sivasambu Bohm received his first degree in Chemical Engineering, followed by an MSc at Hahn Meitner Institute (Max Planck Institute) in Berlin. After gaining his PhD at the University of Bath in Chemistry, he worked at different academic institutions, University of Swansea, TU Delft, The University of Birmingham and India Institute of Technology, Bombay, University of Cambridge, and Imperial College London. Siva has 20 years of industrial experience (TATA, Talga, CAMI, VEMS, GraphenePioneer team, Ceylon Graphite and AM) in various research fields; metallurgy, protective coatings, energy storage in the automotive industry, nanotechnology, and applications of graphene. Dr. Bohm has published 40 patents and 98 scientific publications and implemented 12 commercial products globally. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a Fellow of Technical Surface Coatings. Dr. Bohm has been awarded the Royal Society Industry Fellowship initial at the University of Cambridge, Cambridge Graphene Centre from 2017 and continued fellowship at Imperial College London and Graphene Expert at AM Global R&G & AM Commercial UK Ltd, also Chief Scientific Officer of Ceylon Graphite Corp. Dr. Povoden-Karadeniz has obtained profound experience in computational modeling of thermodynamics, starting with his diploma thesis, where he described the thermodynamics of multi-component, multi-phase mineralizations in heat-affected calcareous rocks due to high-temperature metamorphism. His doctoral study at ETH focused on thermodynamic modeling of rare earth transition metal oxide systems, aiming on the understanding of long-time service degradation mechanisms in perovskite-based high-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. In 2009 he joined the Institute of Material Science and Technology at TU Wien as senior scientist, where he extended his interest to the modeling and simulation of non-equilibrium precipitation in various conventional and special alloys (Ni-base superalloys, steel, Aluminum alloys, refractory alloys, shape memory alloys). At TU Wien, he used his CALPHAD modeling expertise for the development of large multi-component thermodynamic and diffusion databases. Dr. Povoden-Karadeniz teaches special University courses on computational materials modeling and materials research and development for high-temperature applications and has authored more than 40 scientific papers. His paper Thermodynamic modeling of metastable phase in the Al-Mg-Si system was awarded best paper of the year 2013 printed in the CALPHAD journal. He heads the superalloys research team at the Institute of Materials Science and Technology at TU Wien and has been working in a number of projects in the field of early stages of precipitation and solid-state phase transformations in Fe-base, Ni-base and Al-base alloys.

Katsuya Inoue is currently a Distinguished Professor in Hiroshima University Graduate School of Science where he studies the properties of molecules that are both chiral and magnetic. Inoue downplays the special nature of the work that happens in his laboratory, introducing the space by saying, This is a normal organic chemistry lab. While a Master degree student at the University of Tokyo, he studied molecular magnets, which are usually made using organic, or non-metal, materials. Certain organic materials can also have the special property of being chiral, meaning the molecule can come in mirror image versions, like human hands: identical, but non-superimposable. In the late 1980s, no researchers had combined the fields of organic chiral molecules with organic magnetic molecules.

Professor Balachandran is Professor of Electronic Systems and served as Head of Department of Systems Engineering at Brunel University London, UK, from 1999 to 2004. Before joining Brunel University London in 1995, he was a Reader in the Department of Electronics & Electrical Engineering at the University of Surrey, UK. Prior to joining Surrey he was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Electronics at Southampton University, UK, from 1979 to 1983. He received his MSc and PhD degrees in Control Engineering and Measurement & Instrumentation from University of Bradford, UK, in 1975 and 1979 respectively. He received the BSc degree in Physical Sciences from University of Ceylon, Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 1971. After serving as a temporary member of academic staff for nine months in University of Ceylon, Colombo, Sri Lanka, he joined as an academic member of staff in the Physics Department of Fourabay College, University of Sierra Leone in 1971 and remained until 1974. During this period he also taught Physics and mathematics in a secondary school. He was a Visiting Professor in the Driftmier Engineering Centre at University of Georgia in 1993 and 1996. He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Mansoura and Dongguan University in China. In 2004 he was a Visiting Scholar in the School of Engineering & Applied Science at University of California, Los Angeles. Professor Balachandran is a Fellow of IEEE (USA), IEE (UK), InstPhy (UK), InstMC (UK) and Royal Society of Arts (UK). His research interest spans several different disciplines: Electrostatics & Charge Particle Dynamics, Electrohydrodynamics, Micro/Nano particles and fibre generation, Transport of DNA using DEP force, Lab-on-a-chip, Electromagnetic Field Sensing, EM Interaction with Human Body, Dynamic Measurement Systems, Global Positioning Satellite System for Navigation and Medical Electronics. He has actively pursued research in these fields for more than 20 years and published over 200 papers to date and filed 10 patent applications. He has served as an External Examiner for 23 PhD degrees in the UK, France and Australia. Professor Balachandran has presented more than 40 plenary and invited talks in his field of expertise at international conferences around the globe. He has organized and Chaired several international conferences and continue to serve as a member of several scientific and organizing committees of international conferences. He is regularly invited to Chair sessions at IEEE/IAS, ICLASS, and several other meetings in the UK, Europe, USA and Asia. Agarwal worked in various scientific and managerial positions at McDonnell Douglas Research Laboratories in St. Louis. He became the Program Director and McDonnell Douglas Fellow in 1990. From 1976 to 1978, Professor Agarwal worked as a NRC Research Associate at NASA Ames Research Center and as a Principal Research Engineer at Rao and Associates in Palo Alto, California from 1975 to 1976. Dr. Matiar R. Howlader is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at McMaster University, Canada. Dr. Howlader conducts research on new materials and engineered components for integrated sensing systems in health, environmental, and energy applications. He is improving nanomaterial processing and functionalization techniques to invent high-performance non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors for water monitoring and for detecting biomarkers related to neurodegenerative and chronic diseases, including chronic pain. Dr. Ramana is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Dr. Ramana's research expertise is towards developing and/or engineering advanced structural materials for application in energy production, storage and conversion, utilization, and management. Dr. Ramanas extensive contributions are towards a deeper understanding of the multifunctional materials physical/chemical/electronic behavior, manufacturing and associated mechanics at the reduced (micro/nano) dimensionality. Materials/device fabrication, characterization and performance evaluation plays a significant role in his research. His research also focuses on the thin-films/surfaces/interfaces growth and plasma-based advanced manufacturing of next-generation advanced materials, which will have direct applications in power generation system, batteries, fuel cells, and photovoltaics. I'm Abdellah SELLAM, PhD in Materials and Energy Physics and Associate Professor of Physics in the preparatory classes for major engineering schools at the Lycee Mohammed VI in Benguerir Morocco. My passion for physics led me to specialize in the study and simulation of sensors based on graphene and various allotropic forms of carbon. He currently working on an innovative seawater desalination project. This project uses a graphene-based filter to reduce both the energy and financial cost of access to drinking water. This subject is particularly relevant in the current context of global warming, which poses a major challenge to humanity in terms of water resources.

His current research covers a wide range of applications through applying nano particles for property enhancement and function creation. These properties include mechanical properties, barrier resistance, fire retardancy, antimicrobial behaviour, electrical breakdown strength, thermal and electrical conduction with applications in food and drink, textiles, aerospace, energy, biomedicine, transport and construction. Dr. Wei Tao Huang received his Ph.D. degree from Southwest University in 2014. He is currently an associate professor in State Key Laboratory of Developmental Biology of Freshwater Fish, Hunan Normal University, China. His research interests include molecular sensing and logic computing, molecular information technology, and bionanotechnology. He published 50 SCI papers as the first or correspondent author in international famous journals, and applied for nine invention patents as the first inventor, authorized two. He was selected as the Training Object of Young Backbone Teachers in Colleges and Universities in Hunan Province, and the Training Plan of Outstanding Youth in Changsha. He is the director of Hunan Microbiology Society and Hunan Optics Society, and the science and technology evaluation expert of Changsha. Dr. Mananga is Professor (Doctoral Faculty in the Ph.D.' Programs) of Physics & Chemistry at The Graduate Center of The City University of New York (CUNY), where he is the recipient of the 2017 HENRY WASSER AWARD IN PHYSICS from The CUNY Academy for Humanities and Sciences in recognition of “Outstanding Scholarship and Academic Performance.” He is the former Deputy Executive of the CUNY Academy for Humanities and Sciences and currently the Program Director of STEM-Grants for the CUNY Academy. We are working on the stydy of the inhibition performance of the newly synthesized quinoline derivatives on Carbone steel corrosion in acid medium, by gravemitric and the electrochemical techniques such as, impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization. We theoretically study this phenomenon with simulation software such Montecarlo, DFT and MD simulation.

Tatiya Siripongpreda currently a Research Assistant in Metallurgy and Materials Science Research Institute from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. Her research mainly centers on developing nanomaterials, hydrogels, and polymer nanocomposites, as well as designing sensors, including wearable ones, for use in biomedicine, healthcare, environmental monitoring, and food packaging. Dr. Mehran Khan is a postdoctoral researcher at the University College Dublin, Ireland. His research focuses on development of low carbon 3D printed concretes. He has served as an Associate Editor, Academic Editor, Editorial board member, Special issues Guest Editor, and Topical Advisory Panel Member for various academic journals and international conferences. He has authored more than 50 publications and his publications have received over 2,300 citations, resulting in an h-index of 32 and an i10-index of 36. Researchers are exploring ways to use 3D printing to create concrete structures that have a lower carbon footprint. This involves developing new concrete mixtures that use less cement, which is a major contributor to carbon emissions, and also incorporating recycled materials into the mix. By using 3D printing technology, it is possible to create complex shapes and designs that would be difficult to achieve with traditional construction methods. This research has the potential to make concrete construction more sustainable and reduce the environmental impact of the construction industry.
